Baches New Zealand
Baches New Zealand I hear you muse… What on earth is a bach? Something to do with New Zealand bread making? Well, no… a bach (or crib in the South Island) is a New Zealanders holiday home on the coast or at the beach.
In fact a bach is simply a kiwi’s holiday home anywhere in New Zealand.
For generations the New Zealand family have taken their summer holidays away from work and the family home; heading to the coast and their bach where they laze away the days swimming, fishing, climbing and generally larking about recharging the batteries before heading back home.
Many early New Zealand baches were often built without permission and were ramshackle affairs. Bits of wood, no electricity, out door toilets (the aptly named long-drop) all lent itself to a modest shed-like property sprouting out among the trees and meadows, dunes and forests of the New Zealand scenery.
In 1976 came the census and the term "bach" was replaced with "holiday house". New Zealanders everywhere though continue to use bach or crib. Hot on the heels of the census came the regulations and the diminutive wooden shack slowly began to be replaced with more contemporary buildings with all the amenities demanded of a more affluent culture.
Saying all that you can find every type of New Zealand bach still available to stay in across the length and breadth of the country. Some forty thousand holiday rentals in New Zealand are there for you to choose from! We’ve stayed in many a New Zealand bach and it is a wonderful way of seeing the country from a New Zealander’s perspective; literally the grass roots. To wander onto the deck barefoot and look up at the silhouette of lion rock on Piha beach with the sun dipping yellow to gold slowly in front of you. Or wandering among the tall scented tea trees overlooking the Bay of Plenty at Russell marvelling at the islands and sails dotted along the horizon.
Or if you fancy... the remote hut built into rocks sitting over the swell of the crashing oceans in the south island. Fishing by day and quietly reading and writing by kerosene lamp until the light disappears and the southern cross unfolds across the magnificent celestial vault. For accommodation in New Zealand the New Zealand bach is simply the best for experiencing the natural beauty and adventure of this wonderful country.
