Backpacking New Zealand
Backpacking New Zealand! Yes, you cry… I’m up for it! Let’s do it… Let’s backpack! Go go go...! Hold on a minute. Before we leap just how do you Backpack New Zealand? The Dictionary says the Noun for backpack is a rucksack whilst the verb states to go hiking with a backpack Backpacking is... “To walk well, you hike light: Light on yourself, light on your budget and light on the land. Marlyn Doan author Hiking Light”
So I guess backpacking New Zealand or to backpack is to travel around with a rucksack. So for many of us we’ll want to know about
Hostels in New Zealand.
For those who want to know more about New Zealand backpacking then read on…
Phil and I surmise that just because you have a backpack it doesn’t actually mean you’re not going to stay in hotels, rent baches in New Zealand or put your feet up at a New Zealand luxury Inn.So backpacking is simply a generic term for travelling around New Zealand under your own steam then? Well, yes… others say it’s a purer form of backpacking in New Zealand like the more traditional travelling by bus: Check out our info on
New Zealand tourism on wheels.
Now to confuse you further! The term backpacker is recognised in both Australia and New Zealand as describing an establishment catering for those travelling independently or on a budget. Our opinion is if you are travelling with a backpack then anything goes. You will be
cycling New Zealand
staying in hostels, travelling around in a campervan and have lots of bracing walking (with the odd train and a tent thrown in).
So to sum up… You backpack with a backpack and go backpacking in New Zealand whilst sometimes staying at backpackers.
Now that should be clear shouldn’t it? So what about New Zealand hiking? Well, that of course is within the backpacking principle too and can often mean you are camping under the stars. Don’t forget you have more campsites available to you than in the whole of France and the UK combined.

… And will someone tell me about tramping New Zealand? The only thing to remember is that it’s all under the umbrella of backpacking in New Zealand. Stout boots, a map and a rucksack means hiking, walking, tramping and backpacking New Zealand style.
You are in for a treat. Backpacking is New Zealand tourism at its best. It’s what the country does so well.

“There is an intense but simple thrill in setting off in the morning on a mountain trail, knowing that everything you need is on your back. It is a confidence in having left the inessentials behind and of entering a world of natural beauty that has not been violated, where money has no value, and possessions are a dead weight. The person with the fewest possessions is the freest.”Paul Theroux author of The Happy Isles of Oceania
