New Zealand Facts Are Fun!
New Zealand Facts I hear you groan. Not another list of interesting facts so dry it would make a cheese cracker blush.
Talking cheese for a moment, did you know New Zealand produces 100 kg of butter and 65 kg of cheese each year per person? Just how is that going to help me find a holiday in New Zealand? At least you now know that New Zealand is one of the world’s top five exporters of dairy products. Obviously for all you lactose intolerant folk we’ve got facts about sheep too!
New Zealand facts are all about building up layer by layer a picture of this island destination: Having as much information as possible about where you’re going to go. As my maths teacher used to say… you need the tools for the job.
New Zealand history
tells us that Abel Tasman was the first European explorer to sight New Zealand in 1642, but it was Captain James Cook who first set foot on New Zealand soil in 1769. European settlers have been in Aotearoa for about 170 years and Maori settlers for about 900 years. New Zealand is a young country in world terms.
Kiwis love their country. What’s a Kiwi you enquire? Apart from being the most extraordinary and shy bird, the jury’s out on just why New Zealanders are called Kiwis. The general consensus is that the Kiwi is the national emblem and unique to NZ just like New Zealanders! Some say it is shorter and snappier to say than New Zealander which is why its stuck.
And yes, you lovely tourists and travellers, are special and unique too. You support 10% of New Zealand jobs and in the New Zealand economy the same percentage is derived from tourism. So well done and keep on travellin’!
New Zealand Size!Valuable New Zealand facts include how big or small it is. You hear the stories of 20 sheep per person in the country but is it true? Well no. Not that many sheep anyway. It’s more like 9 sheep per person now. What does that mean you cry! It doesn’t tell me anything about size except there are a lot of sheep in New Zealand! Even with this drop in flock numbers New Zealand still has fifty percent of the world market for lamb chops. If you’re vegetarian, close your eyes now please… mmm... grilled for that peppery taste… best lamb in the world!
Of course there's also the
world famous New Zealand wool rugs
and New Zealand sheepskin keeping you warm in the winter. So, the size of New Zealand is… well it’s about the same surface area as Equador (population 13 million) or Italy (Pop. 59m), Britain (Pop. 60m) or Ghana (Pop. 30m), Uganda (23m) or Romania (21m). So, small it is not. That’s around 270,000 square kilometres and New Zealand has a population of 4 million in that area! The same size as Britain but with 56 million less people! WOW!
New Zealand Space! If you want room to move, air to breathe… spaces wide and open… time to experience nature… and time together, then New Zealand gives you that in spades. From the star lit glow of the glorious wilderness to the shimmering lights of urban life you can stand with arms open wide and claim it as yours… at least for the length of your holiday! Armed with your New Zealand culture facts we are sure you will stride confidently through this wonderful country enjoying all the multifarious offerings it has to share.
New Zealand Trees!Like trees? After the decimation of the country’s forests by successive generations the sound of chainsaws finally fell relatively silent to be replaced by the sound of spades planting saplings and the growing of plantations. About 30% of New Zealand is forested now and a third of that is felled and exported sustainably. The figure of 30% will increase as trees planted in recent times grow to maturity. Fully a quarter of New Zealand’s wilderness is protected. So your New Zealand panorama is in good hands! And that’s New Zealand Facts!
