New Zealand Flag
An Introduction

Custom Search

The New Zealand flag has a rich heritage and therefore a lot that can be talked about; for a flag that is. It’s only a piece of cloth but we all know it’s more the representation and cultural identity than the material object that often counts.

So without further ado we are going to dip our toes into three areas of interest for you New Zealand tourists and travellers.

• The flag of New Zealand design

• New Zealand history of the flag

• To Change or not to change?

You know what to do… just click on the links! Now, what is always interesting about a country that finds itself no longer a colony or simply a naturally evolved independent state is the struggle and debate surrounding its national flag.

In the United Kingdom there are more complexities about the Union Jack than ever before. I don’t think it’s because they were never there but that people didn’t have a voice to express themselves. Anyway this is not why we are here!

The Flag is a topic of conversation at any time. There are those that wish for a change from simply removing the Union Jack from the canton to reinventing the flag altogether. Signs of Republicanism I hear you muse? That’s for you to find out when you visit and amaze your New Zealand hosts with your knowledge!

Just know that a flag is more important than you think. The New Zealand Ensign is young and therefore is wrapped up with all recent history. It is flown with pride and held with honour. It represents a wonderful world beating country and that is the recognition and respect it retains globally.

The New Zealand flag is seen to represent a resolute, inventive, resilient and versatile people. Now that’s not bad for a country’s flag is it?
