New Zealand Food
Traditional Tucker

New Zealand Food in the early years was almost wholly Maori and British food. Post second world war saw the American influence take hold. Then Australia, the Asian countries and India exerted an influence.

With an economy based on agriculture New Zealand has an abundance of fresh produce. Traditional New Zealand Cuisine and Maori food in particular emphasise the availability of the islands resources from land and sea.

From Crayfish to Abalone, Lamb to venison and Kumara to Kiwifruit New Zealand Tucker paints its colours with a broad brush across traditions. Gone are the days of a piece of wilted lettuce and warm slices of tomato nestling next to hard chedder in curling white bread sandwiches.

Young New Zealanders now spearhead the change on the back of these traditions. Learning from some and thankfully ignoring others!

Fish and chips hold its (rightful) place as a traditional New Zealand cuisine to be experienced by all visitors. Take your wrapped fish and chips down to the harbour, sit on the wall sipping a cold beer watching the fishermen as the sun floats into a distant evening: Special my friends, very special.

New Zealand Food The delightfully creamy and impossible to make Pavlova resides firmly in the New Zealand tradition of food. Meringue, masses of cream topped with fresh kiwi fruit. Lip smacking.

What about Lamingtons I hear you ask. Well they’re a bit like the UK’s Tottenham cake but instead of pink icing on top, the sponge is coated in a layer of chocolate icing or strawberry jam, then desiccated coconut. Finger lickin’!

Let’s not forget meat pies and custard squares either. The New Zealand pie is a meat (lamb mince or steak) and gravy filled pastry traditionally served with liberal amounts of tomato sauce.

Pie in hand watching the All Blacks is as close to Nirvana as you are going to get. Pies my friends can be found in dairies, lunch bars and bakeries... and their popularity remains high on the list of traditional much loved New Zealand Food.
