New Zealand Public Holidays Waitangi
WAITANGI DAY February 6th A potent and important New Zealand Public Holiday's celebration. In Maori they call it Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Waitangi Day commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand's "founding" document on that date in 1840. Previously any national celebration was marked on January 29th, the day William Hobson arrived in the Bay of Islands. In 1932, Governor-General Lord Bledisloe and his wife purchased and gave to the nation the house of James Busby where the treaty was signed. The house and grounds were made a public reserve on 6 February 1934. This event is considered by some to be the first Waitangi Day and until someone changes it; it’s February 6th. There's a lot of nation chatter and argument over the Waitangi Treaty. At times it seems the whole population of New Zealand has comments to make. So when on your holidays in New Zealand ear to the ground, test the waters, read up and get wise to the history and of course Waitangi Day.
