New Zealand Public Holidays
Christmas!

CHRISTMAS DAY December 25th

As New Zealand Public Holiday's go Christmas is the big one even though for many of us it feels like summer and not winter. I can't explain the feeling so you will just have to experience it!

Christmas Day commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. The day marks the beginning of Christmastide lasting for twelve days. As a public holiday it's weird celebrating Christmas in the sun. Once you're there though you'll get used to it!

Many businesses close for the Christmas period much like other Christmas celebrating countries. This is a popular time for New Zealand folk to take their holidays and many head for their bach or holiday home.

Christmas Cake!

Christmas for the New Zealand population is much like the celebration elsewhere it's just it happens to occur in the middle of the summer! There's Christmas shopping, cards are sent to family and friends abroad and trees decorated at home. Whilst the traditional Christmas meal is still popular Phil has tucked into crayfish on one of his Christmas trips and there wasn't a turkey in sight!

So read that as chilling by the pool and the barbecue with a slice of pavlova for dessert.. mmmm

BOXING DAY the day after Christmas Day

The name derives from the tradition of giving Christmas boxes or gifts to service workers (such as public service staff, postal workers and trades people) in the UK. This day is commonly thought to be the Britain’s name for St. Stephen's Day. Saint Stephen being the first Christian martyrs.

So there you have it, a popular cultural and religious celebration held the world over. But for a few differences (like being on the far side of the world and sunbathing!) Christmas is the same in New Zealand as in most countries. Enjoy!
