New Zealand Ski Vacations Information and Recommendations
For New Zealand Ski Vacations there’s no shortage of tips and advice for anyone about to take to the slopes. Seriously though. If you are planning to Ski New Zealand then make your investment worthwhile. Take the time to read up on the tips and advice on our pages and elsewhere on the web. Before you start, get the information you need from the resort you are going to be skiing at. Decide where you want to Ski and either consider taking lessons as and when you want them or booking a combined lesson and ski vacation package.
So, without further ado here are our recommendations and advice for New Zealand ski holidays. It's not exhaustive but it will, we hope, point you in the right direction for making the most of your New Zealand ski vacations,
1. Skin Always protect your skin from the elements Just as you would do on a holiday in the Maldives. Snows reflective properties are legendary so carry that sun block and sun cream.

2. Clothing Wear a thermal layer next to your skin. Not cotton as the absorbency will leave you cold. It may sound strange but only wear one pair of good fitted socks and no more. You will feel colder! Lots of pockets means you can either remove layers or carry extra ones. 3. Control You are sliding down hill on a slippery slope. Ability to balance and steer are basics to get under your belt. 4. Weather Check the weather reports each day you are on the slopes and dress accordingly. It’s easy to forget which is why it’s important to remember.
5. Ski Boots If anyone has skied before then you know the importance of making sure your Ski Boots fit.Have the socks you are going to wear with you when you try on boots. Only socks go in the boots, nothing else, not trouser legs or gaiters. Make sure the socks are wrinkle free. So you’ve now got the boot on and buckled. Stand up bend your knees and lean forward. Your heel should sit back into the heel pocket of the boot. You should have limited lift and as with day shoes your foot ought to be touching the toe of the boot. Loosen or tighten for a good fit. Warning! Do not loosen the buckles on your Ski boots either on a ski lift or when skiing.
6. Colour Codes Know the colour codes for your slopes backwards. International colours for pistes are as follows: Green is easiest, Blue harder and in increasing difficulty through Red and Black. 7. Insurance The words you are looking for are as follows… Never go on New Zealand ski vacations without Insurance. This type of insurance is commonly called Winter Sports Cover. If the professionals need it then so do we. Don’t travel without it.
8. Rental Equipment For beginners it’s always an idea to have Ski lessons where rental equipment is either part of your New Zealand ski vacations package or available from a ski rental shop at your resort. If you have any problems with the equipment you’ve hired then you’ve got the rental shop within easy reach.
Whilst learning to ski it makes sense to rent instead of buying. Your ski’s will get longer as you get better (we know you will!) The ski’s you end up with will not be the ones you start with.
Like any holiday resort catering for New Zealand tourists, travellers and ski enthusiasts there will be deals to be had on rental packages for equipment and some will combine equipment with accommodation and lift passes. A deposit is often required for rental equipment. So be aware you may need to leave a driving licence, money or credit card refunded on return of the equipment.
9. Snowmaking Depending on the region make sure you choose a ski New Zealand centre with Snowmakers. It’s kinda your insurance that you’ll have snow to ski on when you get there. 10. Learn to Ski Programmes Call the Ski resort and find out what they offer. Is the equipment rental included? If not then where is the ski shop (reserve your equipment ahead of time) and what time do you have to be at the resort area. 11. Bindings Your rental shop will fit you with the correct ski’s and adjust the bindings. This means being honest about your height, weight and ski ability. Your bindings will need to release correctly to ensure you ski safe.
Gotta use your brain, it's the most important part of your equipment. Kevin Andrews and Warren Miller Extreme Skiing.
