New Zealand Tourism
The Talisman of Travel

What is New Zealand tourism ?

Aotearoa Tourism is unique in that it is still in development, still growing. When you visit New Zealand you are part of that development. As a New Zealand tourist you are contributing to the formation of the industry and its promotion and protection of the land and people.

Because of this New Zealand travellers look for the rare, the “off the beaten track” locations. They are often drawn to the local regions beyond the cities and towns with their immovable tourist foundations and help develop the economy and promote the journey through tourism.

New Zealand Tourism - 1 Contributor Phillip This could only happen with New Zealanders and Maori themselves being the keenest of New Zealand tourists and travellers. Their love for all that is New Zealand, all that is Aotearoa, is crucial to tourism development and expansion.

When did tourism in NZ start?

It’s 1881 and with your friends you set out accompanied by a Maori guide across the base of the Southern Alps. The scenery is breathtaking with crashing waterfalls and in the shadows, pools dark and still. The rock faces rise and fall giving way to rugged grassed track. Over each rise and incline the panorama unfolds across the sky as if a magician has a surprise to astonish you with.

Present day. With a rucksack, walking boots and trail map in hand you set out across the base of the Southern Alps with friends. This is the popular Routeburn Track between the Hollyford and Dart Valleys.

The scenery is breathtaking with crashing waterfalls and in the cool shadows, pools dark and still echo the past. The rock faces rise and fall with a giants step, giving way to rugged grassed track and trees sentinal in their silent repose. Over each rise and incline the panorama unfolds across the sky as if a magician has a surprise to astonish you with.

The Routeburn track traverses the magnificent National Parks of Fiordland and Mount Aspiring and have been accessible for the tourist and traveller for over 130 years. Although they weren’t called that then until well into the tenure of The New Zealand Government Department of Tourism which was set up in the early 1900s.
